A Local's Guide to University District: Night Markets, Central Commons Park, and Everyday Essentials
Most of daily life in University District happens on one street and in one park. Retail Main Street (University Avenue NW) has the grocery store, pharmacy, banks and cafés, and Central Commons Park is where the neighbourhood gathers: a splash pad in summer, a refrigerated skating rink in winter and the free University District Night Market from May to September. University District is a master-planned, mixed-use community beside the University of Calgary and Alberta Children's Hospital, and Alberta's first LEED-ND Platinum community. This guide to University District in Calgary covers what is where, when it runs and how locals use it.

Central Commons Park Through the Year
Central Commons Park is a 3-acre green space in the middle of Retail Main Street, surrounded by restaurants, cafés and shops. It opened in December 2022, and its design, including a stair set shaped like the Rocky Mountains, nods to the nature around Calgary and was planned for the city's fast-changing seasons. You can access it on foot from the street or by stairs from the underground parkade, which makes parking simple for visitors from across the city. Beyond the seasonal features, the park hosts concerts and community events.

Rink Rules Locals Know
The rink sits between Borough Bar & Grill and The Banquet, and the fire features beside it are where skaters warm up between laps.
-
Helmets are mandatory on the ice.
-
No hockey sticks, pucks or sleds.
-
The ice is cleared several times a day for about 10 minutes, so expect short breaks.
-
Because the surface is refrigerated, it stays open through a midwinter chinook thaw.
The park is leashed-dog friendly. For off-leash play, University District also has an Urban Dog Park.

How to Do the University District Night Market Like a Local
The U/D Night Market turns Central Commons Park into an evening market with local artisan vendors, live music and entertainment. Entry is free, and the market is open to all ages.
-
Check the date and event details. It usually runs on the last Wednesday of the month from May to September, 5 to 9 pm. In 2026 the dates were May 27, June 24, July 29, August 26 and September 23.
-
Look at the vendor map first. The market publishes an interactive online vendor map, so you can plan a route instead of circling the park.
-
Arrive early for the full lineup. Each market has a different schedule of performers, starting around 5 pm.
-
Eat on Retail Main Street. The park is ringed by restaurants with patios, so dinner, the market and time with friends fit into one evening.
-
Come back for the Holiday Edition. Run in partnership with Marketspot, the 2026 Holiday Edition takes place on Thursday, November 26 and Thursday, December 3. Join the tree lighting at 6:30 pm on November 26, when the first 300 guests get free jingle bells, or come on December 3 for skating performances, a heated igloo and free hot chocolate.
The neighbourhood also hosts an annual U/D Block Party on Retail Main Street and in the park each September, with a marching band and activities for families. Parking is free for the event when you register at a University District business. Dates and lineups for neighbourhood events are posted on the University District events page.
